Establishment
The Devonport Racing Club was established in 1902, the oldest sporting body in the city of Devonport. Club records for the Devonport Cup extend back to 1919 when it was won by Enigmatical and continue through the winners recorded for each year except for 1943 when racing was interrupted by Worled War II.
Early Racing
In the early years, the club was only granted two racing dates each season, one usually in late December and the second on Easter Saturday. Early programmes conducted by the club contained both galloping (including jump races) and trotting events.
The club has continued to race each year since its inception with the exception of the war years, increasing the number of race meetings each season to now regularly hosting 16 race meetings each year, even extending to 30 meetings during 2019/2020 when the TRC redeveloped their track.
Formation
The Devonport Racing Club was formed at a meeting in March 1902 where the committee was elected, four to form a quorum, and that membership be one guinea. Also elected were office bearers Mr. J Henry (chairman), Mr. John Luck (secretary).
